Abstract
N. A. SARUDNY [ZARUDNY]: Interesting Swifts
A series of Common Swifts was collected in "Russian Turkestan" (approximate area of recent Uzbekistan, Kyrgyztan and southern Kazakhstan) and compared with Apus apus apus from Pskov Region and with Apus apus pekinensis from Kashgar (Kashi) area. In spring and early summer, the birds from Turkestan differ from A. a. pekinensis. They are darker and have relatively less extensive pale area on the throat. They are more similar to A. a. apus from Pskov, but differ by more extensive pale throat, duller forehead especially near to bill, duller and more greyish undertail coverts. In most individuals the rump seems also to be duller. The author assigns this form as Apus apus turkestanensis subsp.nov. In Transcaucasus and Persia, the same form also occurs. In summer plumage and in birds inhabiting low altitudes, the individuals became more pale and then indistinguishable from typical Apus apus pekinensis. -Igor Fefelov
