MARTIN GRUND:

Nocturnal observations of sleeping Swifts

On the night of 23-24 July 2002 around midnight single Swifts (Apus apus) were observed for several seconds flying roughly 1000-2000 meters high in front of the almost full moon. Their flight was absolutely smooth without any observable wingbeat and the main wind was blowing from the west. One swift was flying north-west and another, which was observed 10 minutes later, was flying south-west. The estimated flight speed was rather low at about 25 km/h. The observation time was about 15 minutes.

Equipment: Powerful binoculars (15x with 80mm front lenses) on a tripod. Place of observation: Skies over Neustadt/Weinstraße, south-west Germany.
